Happy Monday Everyone! Today we finished typing our descriptive writing and completed our math videos that we've been working on. These items should both be in IRIS this week, so stay tuned. If you do not have a math video or writing posted into IRIS by the end of the week, please let your teacher know!
We started learning about the Blackfoot people today and how they lived on the land before the European settlers came. We came up with some great questions that we can further explore such as, "Why did they kill the buffalo? What did they use the parts for?" and "Why is it important to learn about the Blackfoot people?"
Litter-Less Lunch Days start this Wednesday!!
"Inspired by the City of Calgary’s new Commercial Recycling Bylaw the Grade 1 students would like to invite the whole school to participate in “Litter-less Lunch Days” at Royal Oak! Every Wednesday, we would like to ask that the students’ lunch come only in reusable containers and/or bags. Our Litter-less Lunch Days will begin this Wednesday, March 8th. Thank you for supporting our initiative!"
Circle of Courage Spotlight for Friday, March 10th - Kira & Sam
Circle of Courage Spotlight
Congratulations, your child has been chosen to be our Circle of Courage student. Your child will have the opportunity to share more about themselves and how they show the four quadrants of the Circle of Courage to help build a caring classroom.
Once our Circle of Courage student is announced the student will have a week until their presentation date to collect the following items to share with the class.
Independence
· An artifact your child is proud of and demonstrates independence. i.e. piece of art, writing, project, or video of dance
Mastery
· An artifact that demonstrates a skill or activity your child has mastered. i.e. medals, awards, and certificates
Belonging
· Photograph (no more than 3) that shows belonging, i.e.Family photo, playing with others, family vacation, sports team, class photo.
Generosity
· Family Letter: Family members will be responsible for writing a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you. Send the letter in a sealed envelope to the school with your child on the presentation date your child is sharing. I will read the letter to the class during our circle meetings. The content of the letter is up to you, but you may wish to choose from one of the following ideas: Describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, tell us some interesting facts (no more then 3) we may not know about your child, send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the picture, or write a short story with your child as the main character. You may also send a video for the class to watch if you choose.
After your child has had the opportunity to share, his or her classmates will recognize your child as our Circle of Courage student of the day by writing about how they see your child demonstrating one of the four quadrants on the Circle of Courage. We appreciate your participation in our Circle of Courage Spotlight and look forward to getting to know your child better and build a caring classroom community!
A note from Ms. Hennick:
Dear Parents
We have started our
gymnastics unit in our regularly scheduled gym classes. This unit will run
until the end of March. Safety procedures are being carefully covered with each
class. While students in elementary school are not expected to change their
clothing for gym, I do talk to them about being dressed in preparation to
participate. Please consider the following when sending your child to school:
• Clothing that
allows freedom of movement (no special uniforms or outfits are required – sweats
and a t-shirt work best).
• Loose fitting/baggy
clothing may get caught on equipment when climbing.
• Tucking shirts in
may help to prevent an accident.
• All jewelry that
could get caught on equipment should be removed (left in classrooms or left at
home). e.g. watches, rings, necklaces, etc...
• Students with long
hair should have their hair tied back. Tying hair back with elastics is
recommended.
• Students may wear
shorts under clothing if they wish.
• Students will
participate in bare feet unless there is a medical reason (warts).
Please be aware that
students have gym class each day. Students will be reminded that they must
remain very quiet while participating on the climbing equipment. Sudden noises
could startle a student using the equipment and result in a fall.
Should you have any
questions, please feel free to email me. Thank you in advance for your
understanding in helping to ensure the safety of our students.
Sincerely,
Helen Hennick
