Dear Parents:
Recently, we have noticed an increase of fidget spinners at school which are causing disruptions in the classroom, office, lunch room and during recess. We are asking that these fidget spinners please stay at home.
If you have a doctor’s note that states your child requires a fidget spinner for educational purposes, please provide a copy of this note to your child’s teacher.
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
Sincerely,
Lynn Sparks, Principal

Preparing for the 2017-2018 School Year - Please Read!
Preparing for the 2017 – 2018 School Year
Students Moving:
Please notify the Royal Oak School office if your family is moving before September 1, 2017 out of the Royal Oak/Rocky Ridge. This will help us in planning for the next school year. Please email the school at royaloak@cbe.ab.ca before Thursday, May 18th with your child’s name and grade to state they will not be attending Royal Oak School for the 2017 – 2018 school year. For the students in Grade Three it is a natural transition to W.D. Pratt and that transition happens at the school level. There is no need to contact the school if your child is in Grade Three and moving on to Grade Four.
Parent Requests for Student Placement:
The following information is provided to clarify questions about their child’s placement for next year. This should not be interpreted as an open invitation for student placement requests.
A great deal of time and consideration is put into organizing classes. Many factors are taken into account such as a balance of girls and boys, student abilities, special education needs, English Second Language learners, student learning styles, teaching styles and overall school organization. Your child’s teacher, in consultation with other teachers of the same grade will meet with the school administration to discuss and determine student class placement for next year. We have the best interest of all students in mind.
Should you feel you have a significant “education” circumstance that you would like considered in your child’s placement for next year, please follow the following procedure.
ü Make your one request in writing (multiple requests based upon class organization, friendships, etc. unfortunately cannot be accommodated).
ü Please do not request a specific teacher as the teachers’ grade assignments are not finalized until later in the planning process.
If you have educational reasons for requesting a specific class placement for your child, please email royaloak@cbe.ab.ca before Thursday, May 18th.

What a wonderful Wetlands Assembly we had today. It was the "Grand Opening" of our wetlands sign. Ask me what my favourite part of the assembly was. Afterwards we all got together and cleaned up the compound. What a great way to ring in the Spring weather with a Spring Cleaning!

We will be visiting the Wetlands tomorrow afternoon! Dress appropriately! It is supposed to be quite warm tomorrow.
Today was a Litter-less Lunch Day! Our participation was about 60% (down from last week!). Let's all try to be trash-free next week.
In celebration of Arbour Day on Thursday, May 4th, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry provided tree seedlings for all Grade 1 students throughout the province. This is a long-standing tradition to teach the value of trees and their contribution to the Alberta way of life.
You are an important part of this event! Please note the following:
one tree seedling is for each student to be taken home for planting; seedlings are not to be planted on school property
directions for planting are on the bag which is provided with the tree seedling
pine seedlings may have a little frost damage, as seen by the purple tips; this will not affect tree growth.
Enjoy having your own very special Grade 1 tree!!
Jump Rope Update:
Hello ROS students, parents and guardians!
Our Heart and Stroke Foundation Jump Rope For Heart Fundraiser is well on its way. Our kick off assembly last week got students excited to participate and we have been skipping everyday since in PE. Students are encouraged to continue collecting pledges until Thursday May 11th when we will have our Jump Rope for Heart Day event. The Jump Event will run from 2-2:30 on the 11th, our entire school will converge in the courtyard to skip, be active and have fun. Students are encouraged to bring their own skipping ropes if they have one to participate in this school wide event. Thank you for your continued support!!

Dear Parents,
We are holding our jump event on Thursday, May11th from 2-2:30. Students will be playing hard during this time and we would like to have a healthy, heart smart snack for them to enjoy after. We are looking for a volunteer (or 2) to bring in enough mandarines or orange slices for your child's class to share. If you are able to contribute please contact your child's homeroom teacher. Thank you for your support!

Today was another busy day in our classroom! We have been learning all about Fact Families in Math. Ask me how 3 numbers can be a family! Can I build 4 different basic fact sentences with those 3 numbers?? Here is a song we have been listening to that helps us remember! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsgOSrVnw-M
We also talked about Circle Fridays! Starting May 12th for the last hour on Fridays every student in Grade 1-3 gets to join a special club. Every Friday the students will meet in their special club and do activities based on the theme. Today we chose our top 3 choices! Ask me what I chose. Did I choose Dance? Karaoke? Drama? Or Leadership? Maybe I chose Building? Yoga? OR Puzzles? hmmmm....

It's May! And what a beautiful day it was!
We started our morning with a fabulous assembly for Music Monday. Each grade sang a song and we all sang and danced together. Ask your child why they think Music might be a language everyone can understand.
